This morning my boss and I were discussing the inevitable spread of coronavirus into the US and weighing the pros and cons between stockpiling and choosing to not feed into the frenzy. "Once it comes it's not like we're all gonna die." "Yeah it's just like having the flu for two weeks, and then I guess some people die. I don't know. I'm mostly choosing to not think about it because I have enough other stuff directly attacking my happiness on a daily basis. As long as the person gets checked out and they keep working on a cure I don't think we personally have much to worry about. But that's kind of how humans cope in general: they assume that the bad things they hear about will happen to other people but not them." "Right." "It's the same thing with mass shootings. Like they can and HAVE happened anywhere, and one day Milwaukee will have one, but it probably won't be HERE where I work so I continue to not worry about it. Statistically speaking it won't happen to me. And that line of thinking is how I cope with it." And then seven hours later Milwaukee has a mass shooting at Coors. Trash.
I saw people checking in as "safe from the shooting" on Facebook. Like, yeah girl, you don't WORK at Coors so of course you're safe. Why are you telling us this?
